Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia is bursting with things to do, see and explore with children. However, when travelling with kids, it is easy for the pennies to disappear quicker than you would like them to. Having spent time in Phnom Penh, we discovered that a lot of attractions such as the Royal Palace charge children the same price as an adult. As a family of 4 backpacking on a budget, we are always on the lookout for free things to do with the children in order to save money.

Below I have put together 5 things that you can do with kids for FREE in Phnom Penh.

1. Night Market

Our boys love a night market. We visited so many during our time in Vietnam and are quite happy spending time strolling around the markets searching for treasures. The night market in Phnom Penh is actually one of our favourite ones we have visited so far in SE Asia. It's not too big and we found that the stall holders were not in your face like some of them can be. You can easily walk around the market without spending a penny and just soak in the atmosphere.

Wat Phnom is a buddhist temple and is a historical site representing Khmer national identity. Wat Phnom is free to enter for children and just $1 for adults. Here children can learn about the history of Phnom Penh and what its name stands for whilst strolling around the grounds. The temple itself is guarded by statues of lions and naga (snake) balustrades and at the top of the staircase is a statue of Madame Penh

Inside the temple, children can watch people burn incense, chant and give offerings to Buddha. It is really easy to get to, you can get a Grab Tuk Tuk straight to the entrance gate.

3. Wat Phnom Park

We love a play park! Sadly, we haven't come across many whilst backpacking around SE Asia so we were really excited to discover this one! Wat Phnom Park is a big play park next to the Wat Phnom temple. There are some trees around which offer some shaded areas meaning that you can visit any time of the day. Lots of local children head here and our boys had a wonderful afternoon playing with the local children.

4. Sisowath Quay

Sisowath Quay is a 3km riverside boulevard in Phnom Penh. It is a great place to take a stroll, watch locals do some fishing and spot boats. The strip is lined with cafes, restaurants and bars so you will not be short of places to stop of a drink or bite to eat.

5. Sunset boat trip

As you stroll down Sisowath Quay you will see the river lined with boats. You can take a sunset cruise along the river for just $5 an adult (this includes a free beer/soft drink). As an extra bonus, children are FREE
